Velázquez: President Trump's Trade War an Attack on Main Street

Statement

Issues: Trade

Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Small Business Committee, released the following statement in response to President Trump's decision to impose metal tariffs on key U.S. allies.

"The President's decision to impose new tariffs on Canada, Mexico and Europe, puts the United States in serious jeopardy of igniting a global trade war. In every corner of America, Main Street businesses, startups and small manufacturers rely on imported steel and aluminum to make their products. The President's decision risks disrupting supply-chains, potentially putting foreign suppliers out of reach and forcing them to raise prices and potentially lay off workers.

"Small businesses will also feel the pinch in the area of exports, should these countries retaliate. The President's decision and the subsequent retaliatory tariffs will further steer small firms away from the global market, undermining domestic job creation and economic growth.

"It is imperative that the Trump Administration revisit these reckless moves immediately. The President may Tweet that "trade wars are good', but America's entrepreneurs know better."
