Issue Position: Stop the War on Drugs

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

There are 2.3 million people behind bars in this country -- that is triple the amount of prisoners we had in 1987 -- and 25 percent of those incarcerated are locked up for drug offenses. Taxpayers spend almost $70 billion a year on corrections and incarceration. The war on drugs has also been a war on communities of color. The racial disparities are staggering: despite the fact that whites engage in drug offenses at a higher rate than African-Americans, African-Americans are incarcerated on drug charges at a rate that is 10 times greater than that of whites. -- ACLU

We have more people in prison than any other country in the world, per capita, or in absolute numbers. Per capita, we have 6 times more people in prison than China.
