Feinstein: Trump's Actions Jeopardize Relationship With U.S. Allies

Statement

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on President Trump's actions toward Canada following the G7 summit:

"I'm very troubled by President Trump's antics following the G7 summit. The president's rash decision to withdraw from the joint communique and the completely inappropriate statements by his advisors afterward jeopardize the relationship with one of our closest allies.

"The United States and Canada share much more than a 5,500-mile border: we share common values and interests, and have one of the strongest bilateral partnerships in the world.

"The United States has a nearly $10 billion trade surplus with Canada, including a robust surplus for dairy products. There certainly are disagreements over Canadian dairy pricing, but we must address these disagreements at the negotiating table, not through insults. Canada is not only one of our strongest trading partners but also a key security ally that helps protect American lives at home and abroad.

"I urge the president to drop his threats to impose additional tariffs against Canada. Instead, the president should instruct his administration to resolve any concerns over Canada's dairy protections through the NAFTA renegotiation, the World Trade Organization or other appropriate routes.

"President Trump's antics are clearly alienating our closest allies, undermining our national interests and the international system the United States helped create after World War II. It's time the president recognizes that our allies are invaluable, they're not temporary business partners he can bully and insult."
