Rep. Gene Green Supports Bill to Safely Store Nuclear Waste

Today, Congressman Gene Green (D-TX), released the following statement after voting to support the bipartisan Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, which passed 340-72:

"Congress, back in 1982, passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, directing U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to open a permanent repository for our nation's spent nuclear fuel," said Green. "Over three decades later, America is still without a repository, leaving tens of thousands of nuclear waste vulnerable to acts of terror or other catastrophes. The reasons behind this failure are well known and it is imperative that this Congress and the present administration act to open a safe, permanent storage facility. Until that day, we must find interim storage to ensure that 70,000 tons of spent fuel sitting at our nation's nuclear plants are safe from harm's way at an interim storage facility, such as the one proposed by WCS in Andrews, TX."
