Dear Secretary Pompeo:
Congratulations on beginning your tenure as our nation's chief diplomat. I look forward to working with you as you confront the most pressing foreign policy challenges facing the United States.
As you continue your diplomatic efforts to counter the Iranian threat, find a peaceful path forward to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, and ameliorate Russian efforts to undermine democracy around the world, I encourage you to ensure the U.S. Department of State is fully capable of addressing another serious concern, the threat of rising anti-Semitism around the world. We've seen the heinous results when rampant anti-Semitism goes unchecked, and our diplomatic corps must be fully staffed to combat this widespread and ancient bigotry. Pivotal in this effort is swiftly filling the position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, a position created by Congress in 2004 as part of the bipartisan Global Anti-Semitism Review Act that your predecessor left vacant.
Prioritizing appointing a Special Envoy for Combating Anti-Semitism would strengthen our ability to monitor and combat anti-Semitism abroad while making clear to the world that the U.S. remains dedicated to fighting the bane of anti-Semitism.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise throughout the world, but most concerning is its reemergence in Europe. In 2018, Jews are being targeted in the streets for no reason other than their beliefs and their identity. In European capitals, Jews are being warned against wearing kippot in public out of fear they will be harassed and assaulted; which has already occurred on many occasions, and neo-Nazis are marching openly in the streets echoing the messages of Adolf Hitler. This virulent anti-Semitism is unacceptable and must be confronted both at the highest levels of government and at the community level, and a dedicated Special Envoy to monitor such efforts around the globe is crucial to our success in eliminating this evil.
I worked with you closely during your time in Congress to combat anti-Semitism both at home and abroad and know your commitment to fighting this bigotry. Under your direction, I believe State Department efforts, led by a Special Envoy, can play an increasingly important role to stem the tide against increasing anti-Semitism. I look forward to working closely with you on this important issue.
Very truly yours,
