Today, Representative Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on recent developments on the Korean Peninsula:
"The summit between Republic of Korea (R.O.K.) President Moon Jae-In and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un is an historic milestone and presents a critical opportunity to make the world a safer place. We must embrace the prospect of long-term peace and the denuclearization of North Korea with cautious optimism, and we must maintain our resolve to ensure American national security and the security of our allies in the region is preserved. As the United States engages in negotiations with North Korea, we cannot forget the nature of the North Korean dictatorship and we must continue maximum pressure on the regime for its continued malevolent behavior abroad and vicious repression at home.
"My father, who served as a Company Commander in the Korean War, instilled in me the importance of our democratic ally South Korea and the U.S.-R.O.K. alliance. It remains our duty to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our South Korean partners as we work to achieve an end to this conflict and a more peaceful and prosperous future for the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia and beyond. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Korea, I'm firmly committed to this endeavor."
