Issue Position: Standing Up for Our Military

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

As the most recently deployed Member of Congress, Jim Banks has a unique appreciation for the challenges faced by the men and women who serve in defense of our country. A naval reservist who was deployed to Afghanistan, Banks has seen first-hand the finest examples of selfless service as well as miscues and mistakes that prevent our military from being as effective as it could be.

His first priority in Congress is to ensure the safety and security of our nation. To that end, he has tirelessly pursued policies to help rectify funding discrepancies that leave our servicemen and servicewomen unprepared and ill-equipped to face our enemies. Banks' service on the House Armed Services Committee has been marked by efforts to ensure that our military has everything it needs to keep our nation safe and secure.

One constitutional obligation of Congress is to define the scope of the conflict our military must confront. Banks has been a loud and clear voice for a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force for the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and South Asia against an enemy that did not exist when the original authorization was passed over a decade ago.

Hoosiers are proud of our state's contributions to national defense. From the Fort Wayne Air National Guard to the many other military units across Indiana and the numerous Hoosier companies that develop defense technology and equipment, we have a strong tradition of commitment to national defense. Banks is proud of our state's legacy and is determined to make sure that Hoosier voices are heard in the national defense debate.
