Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement after President Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal:

"I have consistently said that this deal is not perfect, but since 2015, the evidence clearly shows that it has achieved its goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration has abandoned a plan that is working, and has failed to replace it with any clear strategy. This shortsighted decision will embolden hardliners in Iran to double down on their nuclear ambitions, alienate our European and international allies who worked with us on this deal, and make both the United States and Israel less safe. Moving forward, I urge the President to develop a new strategy to prevent Iran from acquiring weapons of mass destruction."
