DeLauro Denounces Trump Administration's Rollback of Anti-Pay Discrimination Policy

Statement

Date: April 20, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding reports that the Trump Administration will rescind a Department of Labor (DOL) policy that helps protect federal contractor workers from pay discrimination. Under current law, federal contractors are regularly reviewed by the Department for salary bias.

"The Trump administration's plan to rescind pay discrimination protections for workers follows the President's pattern of saying he will fight for workers, and then selling them out without any public input. The Department of Labor should not relinquish its important oversight role in ensuring federal contractors' employees are being paid equally for the same work, regardless of their race or gender. The current policy has helped identify pay discrimination at many companies and resolved the issue, while the new one essentially lets companies regulate themselves."

"The biggest economic challenge of our time is that people are not making enough to live on--and this policy change could make that problem even worse. Fresh on the heels of Equal Pay Day, we should not have to tell the President that people in the same job deserve the same pay. It should be obvious. Through this latest action, President Trump and his Administration have once again pushed our nation backwards rather than forward."
