Moolenaar Supports Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution

Press Release

Date: April 12, 2018

Today, the House of Representatives came up short in an attempt to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Amendment needed two-thirds support in the House. More than 220 Republicans voted for it, but it ultimately fell short of passage with more than 170 Democrats voting against it.

The Balanced Budget Amendment would require the annual federal budget to be balanced five years after it is ratified by three-fourths of the states. It would also be possible to waive the Amendment in the event of war.

Congressman John Moolenaar voted for the Balanced Budget Amendment and made the following statement today:

"Right now, 49 states, including Michigan, have balanced budget laws. Michigan families also work hard to pay their bills and balance their own budgets. The federal government should do the same. I support the Balanced Budget Amendment because its addition to the U.S. Constitution is good government and common sense."
