US Ahora - FEMA Suspends Aid to Families Affected by "Maria"

Op-Ed

Date: April 15, 2018

By: Adriano Espaillat

New York City has stood firm with our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico and the surrounding devastated areas to ensure access for affected families to FEMA resources and other emergency services dedicated to helping them rebuild their lives .

My office has just been informed that FEMA will evacuate nearly 90 families who received temporary housing throughout New York City after Hurricane Maria, and these families will immediately lose their Transient Shelter Assistance (TSA) benefits and be asked to withdraw from their temporary hotels on April 21, which is almost a month before the anticipated deadline of May 14.

I contacted FEMA and will send a letter urging that the moving date be extended to allow these affected families the opportunity to make a proper transition to long-term housing, as they are still suffering from seizures and side effects. caused by the storm to your daily life.

Puerto Rico will be rebuilt and New Yorkers will continue there every step of the way. The constant flow of support to Puerto Rico has been invaluable and our City has shown solidarity to help individuals and families-our families-repair and rebuild during this critical moment in history. Continuing to displace these people, US citizens who have already lost so much, will only delay our efforts and the progress that has been made so far on this road to recovery.
