Governors Taft and Perry Encourage Ohio State and Texas Supporters to also Support Hurricane Relief Efforts

One day away from the much anticipated game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns, Ohio Governor Bob Taft and Texas Governor Rick Perry today encouraged fans from both states to support the American Red Cross' Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Prior to big football games, it is customary for the Governors to engage in a friendly wager involving the wearing of team colors or the exchange of products made in each respective state. However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, both Governors Taft and Perry thought it would be more appropriate to take this opportunity to encourage fans to do all they can to help those in need.

"The folks in the Gulf states, in many cases, are our family, our friends, our fellow citizens. This is a national disaster and I'm sure the people of Ohio and Texas will not hesitate to step up and offer whatever assistance necessary," Governor Taft said. "I congratulate the efforts of both universities for coming together and turning to their alumni, students, faculty and the millions of fans and asking that while they support their respective teams, to please support their fellow citizens who are in need."

"I am proud of how Americans have rallied to help our neighbors in need following the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry. "Texas has offered a quarter million people food, water, medical care and a safe haven. And even better, we have given them hope in tomorrow. The generous outpouring has been overwhelming, and yet the need remains great. I encourage all Longhorn and Buckeye fans attending the game Saturday to make a cash contribution to continue helping our neighbors from Louisiana."

On Saturday, the two nationally ranked teams will meet on the field. Prior to the game the two schools will join in a series of public events to remind fans of how they may donate to the American Red Cross. In addition both schools will use public service announcement time during the national broadcast and during radio broadcasts to encourage donations. Ohio State will also work with the Red Cross to provide donation stations around Ohio Stadium on game day.

OSU Athletics is also donating $2 from every game day magazine sold at the four September home games to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Gov. Perry has produced Public Service Announcements (PSA) encouraging Texans do continue giving to the Red Cross that will air during in-state college football games and on jumbotrons at Texas high school football games s
