Rosen Signs on to Legislation Protecting the Special Counsel from Being Fired Without Cause

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced her support for the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act (H.R. 5476). Rosen added her name to the legislation as a co-sponsor this week.

"I'm supporting legislation to protect the special counsel from being fired without cause," said Rosen. "This is about safeguarding the integrity of our democracy. We must let this investigation continue without political interference from the White House or Congress."

The goal of this legislation is threefold:

--Codify existing Department of Justice regulations to ensure that the special counsel can only be fired for good cause by a senior Justice Department official, and the reason must be provided in writing.

--Provide the special counsel a 10-day window to seek expedited judicial review of their removal to determine whether the firing was for good cause. If the firing is ultimately determined to have violated the good-cause requirement, the removal will not take effect.

--Preservation of the staffing, documents and materials of the investigation while the matter is pending.

Congresswoman Rosen has also signed a discharge petition that would force a vote on H.R. 4669, the bipartisan Special Counsel Integrity Act. This bill would prohibit the removal of a special counsel without cause and would allow a special counsel who has been removed to seek judicial review.
