Rubio: State Department Human Rights Report Underscores Why Senate Must Confirm Pompeo

Statement

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement today after the State Department published its 2017 Human Rights Report:

"As Americans, we are blessed to live in a nation founded on self-evident and universal truths that all humans are created equal and possess God-given rights that cannot be revoked. The State Department's annual human rights report reminds us that basic freedoms, which we often take for granted, face continuing assaults worldwide. Human rights abuses by authoritarian forces in Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and other countries not only stir our moral conscience, but also can threaten international stability and our own nation's safety.

"This annual report reminds us that we need someone to lead the State Department who will prioritize human rights. CIA Director Mike Pompeo, nominee to be the next secretary of state, understands that advancing human rights, democratic governance, and the rule of law internationally remains vital to our national security interests. At a time when our nation faces mounting threats from around the globe, the Senate should put country above party and confirm Director Pompeo as secretary of state without delay."
