Moran Introduces Resolution Commending Pentagon Memorial
September 8, 2005

Washington, D.C., September 8th - Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, today introduced a resolution recognizing both the importance of establishing a national memorial at the Pentagon to commemorate the victims of 9/11 and the brave emergency personnel who responded to the terrorist attack. He urged support for the efforts of the Pentagon Memorial Fund, the non-profit organization responsible for constructing the memorial.

"Much effort has gone into planning, designing and raising funds for an appropriate memorial to the184 lives that were lost on this fateful day in September, four years ago," said Moran. My resolution calls on Congress to recognize how important it is to our country and the American people that we establish a national memorial to the victims of the Pentagon attack and the first responders whose swift action saved many lives."

Construction of a 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon was authorized in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2002. The competition to design a fitting tribute garnered 1,126 entries. The memorial is planned for location in front of the wing of the Pentagon where American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building. Representatives from Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania are original cosponsors of the resolution.

The Pentagon Memorial Fund has raised $8 million of the total $18 million needed to complete the project. They have temporarily suspended fundraising in deference to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing relief effort.
