Roberts Nomination to Chief Justice Makes Hearings More Critical

WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement on President Bush's nomination of John Roberts to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States:

"The Chief Justice has an enormous influence on the agenda and outcoming of decisions on the Supreme Court. President Bush's nomination of Judge Roberts for this position only makes this week's Senate hearings more important. Even as recovery from Hurricane Katrina remains all of our first priority, we must also get a much clearer sense on Judge Roberts' respect for Supreme Court precedent, including the Constitution's guarantees of a right to privacy and Congress's ability to regulate interstate commerce.

Particularly now, no one wants a divisive nomination fight. This is, however, the Senate's only opportunity to consider Judge Roberts' lifetime appointment as Chief Justice on the nation's highest court. It must conduct a thorough investigation and vigorously fulfill its Constitutional duty to advise and decide whether it will provide consetn to the President on his choice."
