Rep. Kihuen: Secretary Ross Must Reconsider Census Change

Statement

Date: March 27, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen released the statement below following the decision by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to modify the existing 2020 census to include a question requiring respondents to identify their citizenship:

"I am disappointed in Secretary Ross's decision to include a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. Since President Trump took office, our political climate has been negatively charged with hostile rhetoric and actions aimed at immigrants and their families. The misrepresentation of the immigrant community ignores the fact that each day thousands of immigrants work to make our country's future brighter, and they deserve to be accurately counted. Including a citizenship question on the Census will only serve to further intimidate immigrants and cause many to avoid the Census altogether. It will add confusion and erode overall confidence in what has previously been an unbiased method for accurately measuring our population. I urge Secretary Ross to reconsider his decision and the adverse impact it will have on our country."
