Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (USVI), released the following statement regarding the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

"Fifty years ago today, just one day after delivering his monumental "I've been to the Mountaintop' speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on the balcony of his Memphis, Tennessee motel.

"Renowned for his peaceful approach, Dr. King devoted his life to fighting for the civil rights and liberties for millions of Americans. As we continue to mourn his loss, today we recognize Dr. King for not only his service but for inspiring millions of others to fight for peace, justice, and equality around the world. Dr. Kings' leadership and dedication to the Civil Rights will always be remembered as one of the key factors in ensuring the passage of the key legislative victories such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"During a time where the civil rights and liberties of the minority are being infringed upon by the very laws meant to protect them we must honor Dr. King by continuing to fight for peace, justice and equality for all, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, or socioeconomic status. By continuing his fight not only do we honor his legacy but we work to achieve his vision of a place where children are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
