Rep. Payne, Jr. on the Trump Administration's Decision to End Deferred Enforced Departure for Liberians

Statement

Date: March 28, 2018
Location: Newark, NJ
Issues: Immigration

Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (NJ-10) released the following statement after President Trump ended protections for Liberian immigrants who lawfully reside in the United States:

"President Trump's decision to end the lawful immigration status of thousands of Liberians who live in the United States undermines our nation's reputation abroad. It is a heartless act that will force people to move back to a country that is still rebuilding after two civil wars and a deadly Ebola outbreak. The influx of thousands of Liberians will overburden Liberia's recovery and destabilize the region at a time when the United States should be fostering recovery and stability in western Africa."
