Sanford Cosponsors End Federal Shutdowns Act

Statement

Date: March 21, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Last week, Representative Mark Sanford signed on as an original cosponsor of H.R. 5313, the End Federal Shutdowns Act, which was introduced by Rep. Mo Brooks. In the event of a lapse in federal government funding, this bill would continue to fund the government at the spending level of the previous year.

Rep. Sanford released the following statement:

"In order to avoid a shutdown, this bill creates an automatic trigger to keep the government funded without the usual backroom deals that inevitably jack up the cost of these spending bills and blow any financial restraint out of the water.

"We're rapidly approaching what would be our third government shutdown this year. Indeed, last minute omnibus bills and continuing resolutions are becoming the norm, and regular order seems to be a relic of the past. If the idea is to avoid eleventh hour political brinkmanship that pushes legislators into a Sophia's choice, then this bill will certainly help in that process. Accordingly, I'm proud to be a cosponsor of this bill."
