Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Latest Transgender Military Ban

Statement

Date: March 23, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's latest ban on transgender Americans in the military:

"Our military includes many transgender Americans who have volunteered to risk their lives for our national security, and we need their talents and their dedicated service. President Trump's hateful decision to drive these patriots out of military service -- against the advice of military leaders -- weakens our national security and is inconsistent with our values. I was Majority Leader when the Congress ended "Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and I was proud to lead that effort. We ended it because it was wrong and because it made our country less safe. The same can be said of this new discriminatory policy."
