Messer Delivers Speech after House Passes Largest Ever Opioid Crisis Investment

U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) delivered a floor speech today after the House passed the largest investment ever to tackle the nation's opioid crisis.

The funding bill the House passed allots nearly $4 billion in resources to fight to opioid epidemic through treatment, prevention, and law enforcement programs.

"It's past time to address the opioid epidemic and get serious about saving lives," Messer said in his speech. "Today, we took a big step in the right direction but more must be done to help families dealing with the devastating effects of opioid abuse."

Messer also applauded President Trump for laying out a clear plan to address the devastating opioid crisis through stronger borders and harsher penalties for drug dealers.

"I also support the President's plan to address the opioid crisis by securing our border, stopping the flow of drugs pouring into our country, and reducing rampant prescription drug abuse," Messer said during the speech. "And the President is right: for the worst drug traffickers the death penalty should be an option."

Messer also expressed strong support for the President's plan to do more to educate young people about the horrific effects of drug use.
