DelBene Statement on Aluminum Tariffs

Statement

Date: March 8, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today released the following statement after President Trump announced tariffs on aluminum imports.

"Aluminum is critical to our economy and national security, providing material for aerospace, building construction and cars. But U.S. producers are at an unfair competitive disadvantage as other countries' policies promote oversupply and market manipulation -- threatening our homegrown businesses, jobs and communities," DelBene said. "Unfortunately, this administration's actions don't solve the problem, they just create damaging chaos and confusion with our trading partners. We need to develop a solution that specifically targets bad actors, such as China, not our closest allies. Starting a trade war with our responsible partners isn't the answer -- it will cost Washington state jobs and raise prices on consumers."

DelBene serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over trade issues, and is co-chair of the Congressional Aluminum Caucus. Washington's First District is home to an aluminum smelter in Ferndale, WA.
