Rep. Pitts Honors Rehnquist
September 6, 2005

Washington-Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) made the following statement honoring the life and career of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist who passed away over the weekend at the age of 80 after a battle with thyroid cancer.

"Chief Justice Rehnquist brought his superior intellect and wisdom to bear on the most important legal matters facing this nation. He embodied the very best ideals of what we hope for in our judges: keen intellect, sober judgment, firm convictions, and a view of the law grounded in our nation's finest traditions. He led the Court ably through uncertain times as it dealt with rapid changes in society and their impact on our laws. Even during his final years, as he struggled with illness, the Chief showed remarkable character and clarity in leading the court. We will all miss him. As the Senate prepares to fill two vacancies on the Court, I hope the Senate will adopt the same spirit of civility that characterized the Chief Justice's tenure on our nation's highest Court as our nation's pre-eminent jurist."
