Rep. Marino Introduces "Keep Our Pets Safe Act"

Statement

Date: Feb. 7, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Tom Marino (PA-10) introduced H.R. 4941, the Keep Our Pets Safe Act of 2018.

Each year thousands of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in a parked vehicle which can quickly reach extreme temperatures even on a day that does not seem hot to humans.

The Keep Our Pets Safe Act makes it a federal offense to leave a pet in a car or other confined space if the animal could die as result of excessive exposure to heat or cold, lack of ventilation, or lack of water.

Congressman Marino said the following regarding the introduction of this bill:

"As an animal lover, it breaks my heart to see any animal suffer or die from what is easily preventable. Even with a window cracked, it only takes a few minutes for your vehicle to become too hot for your pet to handle. This bill holds accountable those who fail to properly care for their pet by making sure they are not being left alone in an environment that can kill them. I strongly urge my colleagues in the House to support this bill."
