Rep. Ellison on Shutdown Agreement

Statement

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate and U.S. House voted to pass a three-week continuing resolution to reopen the government:

"Eight hundred thousand Americans are living in a state of crisis every day. As of today, nearly 17,000 Dreamers have lost their legal protection because Donald Trump unilaterally canceled DACA with no plan or program. Trump created an emergency, even if Republicans keep insisting there's time for a solution.

I voted no on this deal because I've met with too many Dreamers over the past few years to be in favor of delaying even a single day. It's now on us to demand that Mitch McConnell and the Republicans honor their promise to allow Congress to vote on the Dream Act. In the coming weeks, we are going to be out there in the streets to demand exactly that.

In addition to this bill's failure to provide a solution for Dreamers, it fails to reauthorize funding for the community health centers that 27 million Americans rely on for their health care. Republicans have yet to provide disaster relief for Texas, Florida, California, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and have underfunded the Social Security Administration. This continuing resolution--the fourth since September--represents a failure of governance by the Republican Party.

Trump and the Republicans have to start accepting the responsibilities the majority party, allow a vote on the Dream Act and pass an annual spending bill."
