House Advances Six Year Reauthorization of CHIP

Statement

Date: Jan. 19, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, joined the majority of his House colleagues in voting to advance legislation to fund the government and to extend the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years -- the longest such extension in the programs history. Upton released the following statement:

"CHIP is a critically important public health initiative that serves the most vulnerable among us. It helps tens of thousands of children in Michigan alone. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to extend CHIP with all due speed. If not, it could be disastrous for our communities. Children and families are counting on us. Here in the House we made a promise, and we delivered."

In 2015, Upton helped broker the bipartisan, bicameral deal that last reauthorized the CHIP program. Over the course of the past year, he has worked tirelessly to reauthorize CHIP at the Energy and Commerce Committee and on the House floor.
