Congressman Dan Kildee Meets with Michigan DREAMers, Continues Push for Congressional Action on Dream Act

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today met with Michiganders who currently have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, commonly known as DREAMers. During the meeting, Congressman Kildee discussed how Democrats continue to push Congress to act immediately and protect the approximately 800,000 children in America with DACA status.

Congressman Kildee's efforts to protect DREAMers comes after President Trump ended the DACA program. The vast majority of Americans--including Republicans, Independents and Democrats--want Congress to act in a bipartisan fashion to support citizenship and permanent status for DREAMers.

"DREAMers are Americans in every way except on paper. They grew up in the United States, brought here by their parents through no fault of their own, and we cannot turn our backs on them," said Congressman Kildee. "Congress must act to fix our broken immigration system and protect these young adults. The majority of the country and the majority of Congress support protecting DREAMers. Republicans should allow for a vote on the DREAM Act."

Nearly 800,000 children and young adults, including approximately 6,000 in Michigan, are protected by DACA. Because almost all DREAMers are students or employed, DACA deportations could cost Michigan's economy more than $300 million.
