Congressman Liz Cheney's statement on the introduction of the Iran Freedom Policy and Sanctions Act.

"The Iran nuclear agreement brokered by President Obama is perhaps the most damaging agreement our country has ever entered into and President Trump was right to decertify the deal, which is fundamentally flawed and fails to prevent the Iranians from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Today, I am proud to join Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) in introducing the Iran Freedom Policy and Sanctions Act, which makes clear what any effective agreement would have to contain. To truly prevent Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons, an agreement would have to, at a minimum, authorize anywhere, anytime inspections including inspections of military facilities; disclosure of all past and present, military and civilian nuclear activity; a ban on weapons-grade enrichment; and a restriction on ballistic missile development. The Obama nuclear agreement failed to include these crucial elements and, instead delivered sanctions relief and cash payments to the Iranian regime in exchange for unverifiable promises. The Iran Freedom Policy and Sanctions Act will ensure that sanctions on Iran will only be relaxed if Iran meets these crucial requirements.

The Iranian regime supports terrorist groups like Hezbollah, imposes brutal theocratic rule on the region, commits heinous human rights abuses, and consistently calls for the destruction of our nation. We must prevent a regime like this from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The Iran Freedom Policy and Sanctions Act will ensure that any sanctions relief will be based on an agreement that would verifiably preclude the Iranians from obtaining a nuclear weapon."
