Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after he introduced H.R. 4810, the Making Available Plans to Promote Investment in Next Generation Networks without Overlapping and Waste Act of 2018 ("MAPPING NOW Act of 2018."). The legislation is co-sponsored by Rep. Brett Guthrie of Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District:
This legislation directs the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information to develop and maintain a broadband map through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). An accurate map of broadband availability is an important precursor to ensuring that scarce infrastructure funds are targeted to those rural areas most in need.
"This legislation is very simple, yet necessary," said Bill Johnson. "Before a rural broadband buildout can be completed, it is imperative to know which areas of America are unserved and underserved. Many rural areas of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio find themselves on the wrong side of the urban-rural digital divide. Insufficient internet access leaves far too many American families and businesses without access to streaming video, telemedicine, educational opportunities, and much more. I thank Rep. Guthrie for his support, and I look forward to the upcoming debate on this important bill."
"Far too many Kentuckians are unable to access reliable broadband internet service," said Congressman Guthrie. "One of the fundamental problems is that we do not have accurate data on where exactly service is lacking. By reinstituting a nationwide map of existing broadband internet service, we are taking a crucial step towards better targeting deployment so that providers can better serve rural areas. I want to thank Congressman Johnson for his leadership on this bill, and I look forward to continuing to work with him and our colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee as we consider ways to address broadband needs around the country."
