DeMint Statement on the Death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist

September 4th, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) made the following statement:

"Chief Justice William Rehnquist served the United States Supreme Court with honor and integrity for more than thirty years. Rehnquist consistently confined his judicial philosophy to a Constitutional framework that limited judicial and federal power. Time and again, his restraint prevented state rights from being trampled by the federal government's expansive reach."

"This is an important moment in American history, as multiple Supreme Court vacancies are extremely rare. I trust President Bush will nominate a replacement who is committed to following the text of the law, not their personal beliefs.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the Chief Justice. Now is the time for remembrance of this remarkable man, and of his selfless service to our country."
