Hatch on the Importance of Maintaining Critical Intelligence Tools

Statement

Date: Jan. 16, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the senior Republican in the United States Senate and the longest-serving member in the history of the Senate Intelligence Committee, issued the following statement after the Senate voted to begin debate on reauthorizing Section 702 of FISA:

I'm pleased that the House approved legislation last week to reauthorize expiring provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. These foreign intelligence authorities, which are subject to strict government oversight, strike an important balance between personal privacy and national security. I applaud my colleagues who have worked tirelessly to reach an agreement that makes modest enhancements to FISA's compliance and oversight provisions without adversely affecting the intelligence community's operational effectiveness. The Senate should now act quickly to extend these critical authorities before they expire.
