Murphy Votes Against GOP Tax Bill

Statement

Date: Dec. 19, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., issued the following statement explaining her vote against H.R. 1, the Republican bill changing the tax code for individuals and businesses:

"From day one, my priorities for tax reform have been to simplify the federal tax code and to empower middle-class families and small businesses to the greatest extent possible, and to accomplish these goals in a bipartisan and fiscally-responsible way. The final tax bill fails to achieve these objectives.

"Earlier this year, I introduced a balanced budget amendment to address the excessive federal debt, which is a threat to our economic stability, our national security, and the Social Security and Medicare benefits that our seniors have earned through a lifetime of hard work. The Republican tax bill, even under optimistic economic growth estimates, will still add over a trillion dollars to our debt.

"I cannot in good conscience support legislation that compromises the long-term prosperity of our economy and safety of our nation, especially when millions of middle-class families and small businesses in Florida will see their tax bill increase or will receive no meaningful tax relief under this bill."
