Press Release

Date: Dec. 19, 2017
Issues: Taxes

Congressman Liz Cheney's statement on House passage of H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

"Today the House of Representatives passed important legislation to cut taxes and simplify our out-of-date tax code. I'm pleased Congress seized this historic opportunity to provide tax relief for Wyoming families and job creators. Allowing Wyoming families and businesses to keep more of their hard-earned money will encourage additional investment in our economy and help our local businesses expand, generating economic growth and creating new jobs for Wyoming.

The final version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act doubles the standard deduction for individuals and families, expands the child tax credit, and eliminates significant fraud by requiring every child claimed have a valid social security number. We doubled the exemption for the estate tax, cut taxes for all income levels, as well as lowered our corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%. This bill will encourage businesses to invest in the United States, creating jobs and economic growth.

I'm also pleased the final version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act repeals Obamacare's individual mandate, an unconstitutional and unjustified provision requiring individuals to purchase insurance they don't want at prices they can't afford. This is a critical step towards rescuing our health care system from the train wreck of Obamacare.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act goes a long way towards ending the massive government overreach of the last eight years and will provide much-needed relief for families and communities across Wyoming."
