Congresswoman Jackie Speier Calls for Congress to Fight FCC Repeal of Net Neutrality

Statement

Date: Dec. 14, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

If you hate cable, you're going to really hate the FCC's repeal of our net neutrality rules. Overwhelmingly, the public has called for the preservation of Title II net neutrality rules, and the FCC should heed those calls. Today's short-sighted decision will allow big corporations to charge you, or the content provider, more to view material online, and will severely undermine the ability of small businesses to compete in the digital sphere. The FCC has tried to pass off the responsibility of oversight to the FTC, but the FTC has neither the technical capabilities nor the bandwidth to reasonably enforce fair practices online. Net neutrality is the backbone of a free and open internet, and Congress must fight to ensure that every citizen - not just those that can afford it - has access to this fundamental right.
