Rothus Praises House Passage of Legislation to Increase Transparency and Oversight Over Iran- U.S. Business Transactions

Statement

Date: Dec. 14, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

As a member of the Financial services committee where these two bills originated, Congressman Keith Rothfus (PA-12) released the following statement after voting for the successful passage of the Iranian Leadership Asset Transparency Act, H.R. 1638, and the Strengthening Oversight of Iran's Access to Finance Act, H.R. 4324:

"Iran is the world's number one state sponsor of terrorism and is ruled by corrupt leaders. The Iranian Leadership Asset Transparency Act targets Iran's corrupt elite, who have amassed significant wealth at the expense of their fellow citizens. This bill shines the light on assets held by Iran's top government and military leaders so the average Iranian has a better understanding of how their elites fail them. It also gives Non-governmental organizations, Americans, and other observers in the private sector a more transparent picture of Iran as the destabilizing force and adversary it is."

Representative Rothfus Continued, "Similarly, the Strengthening Oversight of Iran's Access to Finance Act gives the United States government greater oversight regarding certain business transactions with Iran. It safeguards the U.S. financial system from Iran's illicit activities. Iran's destructive influence continues to pervade the broader Middle East, and the U.S. must be vigilant to scale back their treacherous actions."
