Gardner Statement on Designation of North Korea as a State Sponsor of Terror

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) released the below statement following President Trump's announcement that he will designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terror.

"I applaud the Administration's decision to designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terror, which is something I have been pushing the Trump Administration to do for several months," said Gardner. "North Korea imprisons and tortures their own citizens, murdered American citizen Otto Warmbier, and continues to defy international sanctions. Their evil knows no limits and it is time the United States applies maximum pressure to contain this rogue regime. I will continue to work with the Administration to sanction all entities, wherever they may be based, that aide North Korea's nuclear program."

Gardner authored the North Korea Sanctions Policy and Enhancement Act, which was signed into law by President Obama in February of 2016 and marked the first time Congress imposed stand-alone mandatory sanctions on North Korea. Gardner recently introduced comprehensive bipartisan legislation to impose an economic and diplomatic embargo against North Korea and its enablers, and to authorize efforts to combat Pyongyang's widespread human rights and labor trafficking abuses. He has also sent a letter to Ambassadors of nations maintaining diplomatic ties with North Korea, calling on these nations to cease all official diplomatic and economic relations with North Korea.
