Rep. Jacky Rosen Proposes Amendments to Counter Harmful Provisions in House Republicans' Tax Bill

Statement

Date: Nov. 15, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03), a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, put forward six amendments to prevent a number of harmful provisions in the House version of Republicans' tax bill, H.R. 1. Rosen's amendments would protect the medical expense deduction, the deduction for teachers buying school supplies out of pocket, tax credits for solar and geothermal energy, deductions for student loan interest and tuition expenses, Private Activity Bonds that incentivize private investment in public works, and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit that helps businesses hire veterans and the disabled.

"Regular Nevadans deserve a simpler, fairer tax code that puts more money in their pockets while creating jobs, reducing the debt, and moving our economy forward," said Rosen. "Instead, this partisan legislation eliminates a number of commonsense tax relief policies that help families burdened with high-cost medical expenses, students struggling to pay off their college loans, and teachers trying to buy basic supplies for their classrooms. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle need to consider what these harmful provisions in their tax bill will mean for average families trying to grapple with a medical crisis or make ends meet with rising tuition costs. For reasons beyond comprehension, this bill also repeals tax credits that help businesses hire our veterans and disabled Americans and invest in renewable energy. My amendments will protect these important provisions in the tax code, and they deserve bipartisan support. I hope Congressional Republicans will re-evaluate this flawed plan and come back to the table to find common ground on bipartisan tax reform bill that puts working families and small businesses ahead of billionaires and corporate profits."

Amendments to H.R. 1 filed by Rep. Jacky Rosen:

Amendment #76: Prevents the elimination of the medical expense deduction.

Amendment #77: Prevents the elimination of the tax deduction for the costs of school supplies purchased by teachers out-of-pocket.

Amendment #78: Prevents the eventual elimination of tax credits for solar and geothermal energy.

Amendment #87: Prevents the elimination of the deductions for student loan interest and tuition expenses.

Amendment #88: Prevents the termination of Private Activity Bonds (PABs), which incentivize private investment in public works and other projects benefiting the public, and is particularly important to Nevada's nonprofit hospitals (including St. Rose Dominican), affordable housing organizations like Nevada HAND, and McCarran International Airport.

Amendment #89: Prevents repeal of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which provides tax credits for hiring veterans and the disabled.
