Congressman Norman Testifies Before ITC

Press Release

Date: Oct. 20, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

Washington, D.C. -- Yesterday, Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) testified before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding a Section 201 "safeguards" case. In the case, Whirlpool alleges Samsung and LG have caused injury to domestic markets by importing high volumes of large residential washers and their parts. Whirlpool is seeking heavily restrictive tariffs and limitations on their own competition.

Congressman Norman believes the government shouldn't jump into markets to restrict competition. This is a textbook example of the government's ability to pick winners and losers and why they shouldn't be able to do so.

This could have a large impact on the developing Newberry Samsung facility, which is set to create nearly 1000 new jobs in South Carolina's 5th district. Samsung has already demonstrated investment in the state by making large investments in the Charleston Fisher House, an organization supporting veterans and their families in our state.
