Pocan Slams Trump for Sending Wisconsin Insurance Rate Increases Sky-High

U.S. Representative Mark Pocan (WI-02) today released the following statement regarding news that Wisconsin consumers will face an average premium rate increase of 36 percent for individual insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. This rate increase is a direct result of the Trump Administration refusing to guarantee that the federal government will continue cost-sharing reduction payments.

The Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner required insurance companies to submit rates based on the assumption that the federal government will discontinue these payments, rather than make them as required by current law. As a result of President Trump's threats, in Dane County, the 2nd lowest cost silver plan will increase by an average of 60.54%, from $219.75 to $352.78.

"President Trump is doing everything he can to sabotage the ACA and his actions are now having a very real impact on tens of thousands of Wisconsinites. With premiums jumping 36 percent, President Trump's threats to discontinue cost-sharing reduction payments are sending the insurance markets into chaos and costing Wisconsin families hundreds of dollars every month. President Trump has never cared about working men and women, and with these rate increases, it is clearer than ever that he is actively working to hurt them. President Trump should reverse course to guarantee that his administration will continue the payments and Congress should act to make them permanent."
