Hoyer Statement on Lawsuit Filed by Oversight and Government Reform Committee Democrats

Statement

Date: Nov. 2, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to a lawsuit filed by Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee against the Trump Administration for withholding documents regarding the Trump Hotel:

"This White House cannot continue to ignore statutory requests from the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to produce documents. Doing so violates the law, and in withholding information from Congress the White House is only fueling speculation about what might be hidden from the public. I wholeheartedly support efforts by Democrats on the Committee to bring suit against the President to compel him to release the requested documents that might reveal whether he is using the presidency for private financial gain by encouraging foreign dignitaries to spend money at the Trump Hotel during their stays in Washington. Under the "Seven Member' provision in statute, the White House is required to provide these documents and must do so. It is critical that the American people know whether foreign payments are being made to the President's company with his knowledge in return for access and influence."
