Scott Statement on Trump's Administration Continued Sabotage of Americans' Health Care

Statement

Date: Oct. 13, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after President Trump issued a statement the administration will unilaterally cut off the Cost-Sharing Reduction payments required under the Affordable Care Act.

"Yesterday, the administration took unprecedented action to undermine the health and well-being of the American people. The president issued an executive order to unravel health coverage by allowing the sale of bare bones plans with no guarantee of comprehensive coverage for pre-existing conditions. In addition, the administration has indicated that it will stop paying promised subsidies that help millions of Americans and their families afford health insurance. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this reckless act will increase premiums 25 percent by 2020 and cause insurers to pull out of the Marketplaces. Additionally, ending these cost-sharing payments adds nearly $200 billion to federal deficits over ten years.

"These brazen acts of sabotage show the administration is willing to go to great lengths to undermine the law - no matter the pain caused to millions of Americans. The American people are tired of the constant sabotage and want the administration to work with Congress on real bipartisan solutions to improve our health care system and build on the progress of the Affordable Care Act."
