Rep. Johnson's Statement on Trump Decertifying the Iran Nuclear Deal

Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement after President Donald Trump withheld certification of the Iran nuclear deal, a 2015 agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, China, Germany and the European Union that halted Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions:

"Despite the wise counsel of the national security professionals around him, President Trump has decided to decertify the multilateral Iran nuclear agreement," said Johnson. "This reckless and ill-considered approach is short sighted and undermines the ability of the U.S. to lead other nations in peacefully resolving current and future international conflicts. In addition to his own experts, national security experts from across the world, including former Israeli leaders, as well as Democrats and Republicans who voted to approve the deal, agree that we should uphold the Iran nuclear deal and not walk away from it. By decertifying the deal, we are playing with fire. We should be the world's leader working with our allies in moving towards a world free of nuclear weapons rather than engaging in partisan politics with important international agreements simply because they were negotiated by the Obama Administration. President Trump is taking us down a dark path that reinforces our isolation on the world stage."
