Kildee Statement on Supreme Court Arguments on Partisan Gerrymandering

Statement

Date: Oct. 3, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today as the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Gill v. Whitford, a political gerrymandering case in which a lower court found that a Wisconsin redistricting map heavily favoring Republicans was unconstitutional:
"Simply put, partisan gerrymandering is dangerous to our democracy. Voters should choose their elected officials, not the other way around. It is wrong to manipulate districts to favor one particular political party, which denies Americans the right to fair representation. That is why I have joined with Republicans and Democrats in filing an amicus brief with the High Court asking them to abolish partisan gerrymandering.

"With this case, the Supreme Court can stand up to special interests and give the power back to the voters. All Americans deserve fair and equal representation at the ballot box."

Last month, Congressman Kildee filed an amicus curiae brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to abolish partisan gerrymandering. The brief, signed by Republicans and Democrats, proposes the High Court put guidelines on drawing district lines.
