McEachin Statement on Reports of DOJ Plans to Undermine Affirmative Action

Statement

Date: Aug. 2, 2017
Location: Richmond, VA

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement following reports that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will attempt to undermine affirmative action in higher education:

"Now, this administration wants to use higher education as a pawn in the games they play with American students of color. Education has always been the key ingredient to the American Dream, and affirmative action helps make that dream more accessible to everyone -- regardless of race. This attempt to roll back the progress we've made would set back millions of Americans and further institutionalize The Achievement Gap. I remind Attorney General Sessions that segregation was ruled illegal years ago, and we thrive when our communities, schools, and workplaces are diverse.

"I have grave concerns that this will not be a fair or evidence-based project. This project will waste taxpayers' dollars to pursue investigations that will likely run afoul of landmark Supreme Court cases -- including most recently Fisher v. UT Austin."
