Congressman Nadler Signs Discharge Petition to Bring DREAM Act to the House Floor

Statement

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, joined with House Democratic colleagues in signing a discharge petition to force a vote on the bipartisan DREAM Act (H.R.3440), which would provide a permanent solution to allow young undocumented immigrants brought here as children to remain in this country legally. The petition--if signed by a majority of Members--would force a vote in the House on this legislation, helping the nearly 800,000 young DREAMers now living in fear because of President Trump's dangerous decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Adding his name to the 116 Members who have signed, Congressman Nadler called on his Republican colleagues to join the discharge petition in order to force a vote on a bill that would finally provide a permanent solution for young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children and are now at risk of deportation:

"These young DREAMers have lived here nearly their whole lives -- they are our neighbors, our children's classmates, and members of our military," said Congressman Nadler. "DREAMers are an essential part of building this country's future, which is why President Trump's decision to terminate the DACA program is so dangerous and immoral. It denies the nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants brought here as children the chance of living the American Dream. Congress must do the right thing to uphold our highest American values, and I call on all my colleagues to support the bipartisan DREAM Act."

H.R. 3440, the DREAM Act, is bipartisan, bicameral legislation which would permanently protect DREAMers from deportation. It was originally introduced by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Congressman Nadler is a cosponsor of the bill.
