Suozzi Meets with President along with Bipartisan Delegation

Statement

On Wednesday, Congressman Tom Suozzi met with President Trump at the White House along with a bipartisan delegation to discuss infrastructure, health care, tax reform, and DREAMers. Suozzi issued this statement shortly after the meeting ended.

"It was a great honor to be invited to the White House with a bipartisan group of colleagues. While I don't agree with the President on everything, I came to Washington to try and get things done on behalf of the people I serve. That's why I'm Vice-Chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, and that's why this opportunity to negotiate bipartisan solutions is an important step forward.

"At today's meeting, we discussed infrastructure, which I believe is essential to our country's long-term financial health and creating good jobs at good wages. We discussed health care, where I promoted the Problem Solvers Caucus' bipartisan proposal to stabilize the individual market and preserve key elements of the Affordable Care Act.

"We also discussed tax reform, and I made it clear that I will not support any tax reform effort that includes the elimination of state and local tax and mortgage interest deductions. The United States has not done tax reform since 1986, and the world is completely different than it was then because of globalization. Corporate and individual tax reform cannot be designed to provide corporations with simply more money for stock buy-backs, dividends, and executive pay. And individual tax reform cannot be designed to provide more money to wealthy individuals. The corporations and wealthy Americans are doing just fine. Instead, any tax reform must be designed to help create good jobs at good wages.

"We also discussed the Dream Act to create protections for children younger than 17 who were brought to the United States and have lived here for at least four years, who pursue a higher education, serve in the military, or are employed.

"I was elected to do a job, and I will continue to serve the people by striving to get things done and creating bipartisan solutions to solve the biggest problems facing Nassau, Suffolk and Queens today."
