Press Release

Date: Sept. 13, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

A measure championed by Representative Steve Knight (CA-25) and Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) in support of bringing the Olympics back to Los Angeles in 2028 was introduced on the House floor Wednesday.

"Not only is hosting the Olympics a great opportunity for the United States to show international unity, but having the games in Los Angeles grants the city and surrounding communities an opportunity to showcase our unique culture and diverse offerings," said Knight.

Knight's resolution, H. Res 516, is a House concurrent resolution that supports the awarding of Los Angeles to bring the 2028 Summer Olympic Games back to the United States and pledging the cooperation of Congress with respect to that bid. Rep. Knight is the sponsor of the resolution along with original co-sponsor Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34). A similar resolution was introduced and passed in the House last Congress which supported the bid to be in 2024. With the official announcement from the International Olympic Committee of the City's approval of the 2028 bid, Representatives Knight and Gomez worked together to request full support from the House of Representatives for this incredible opportunity.

"Los Angeles is the perfect city to host the Olympic Games. Its rich cultural diversity and sportsmanship best exemplifies the Olympic spirit," said Congressman Jimmy Gomez. "Growing up in nearby Riverside, I remember the thrill of the competition and the athletes who inspired us in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, from Mary Lou Retton to Carl Lewis. I look forward to seeing what this excitement will do for our city, and the region, as we prepare for 2028."

In previous years, Knight has signed a bipartisan letter with other representatives California to Larry Probst, Chairman of the United States Olympic Committee, detailing Los Angeles' distinctive advantages as a host city. These include adequate transportation infrastructure, already existing facilities, and previous success in hosting the Games. Knight, who represents the nearby Antelope, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valleys, believes the Olympics would yield positive economic impacts for the entire region.

"Bringing the Games to the Greater Los Angeles area will bring more commerce to our local businesses and assist in expanding the reach of our local industries. I look forward to working Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti moving forward with the details. Rep. Gomez and I will work closely with our House colleagues to support this opportunity for the U.S. and Los Angeles," continued Knight.
