DelBene: GOP's Budget is an Attack on Middle-Class Families

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today in a House Budget Committee hearing highlighted the damaging effects the Republican budget would have on working families.

"The Republicans' budget jeopardizes the middle class by gutting funding for basic necessities like healthcare, nutrition, housing and education," DelBene said. "This budget would also have a negative impact on investments in infrastructure, job training and scientific research. We should be working on a bipartisan budget that provides working families certainty and stability through strategic, forward-looking investments. This budget is as irresponsible as it is dangerous, and demonstrates no vision for growth and innovation."

DelBene serves on the House Budget Committee, which has jurisdiction over these issues. She offered an amendment to protect funding for programs that improve the economy and create jobs in struggling communities, as well as an amendment to increase strategic investments in scientific research. Republicans blocked both of her amendments.

The House Republican budget cuts funding for community development programs, which provide localities with funding for housing, nutrition, education, infrastructure and job training. Their budget also guts Medicaid and privatizes Medicare, both of which provide vital healthcare services to the most vulnerable.
