Senator Lankford Welcomes Additional Sanctions on Iran, Russia, North Korea

Statement

Date: July 27, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

Senator James Lankford (R-OK) issued the following statement regarding passage of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (HR 3364), legislation that gives the Trump administration an essential tool for deterring threats from Iran and North Korea and expands current US sanctions on Russia. The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 98-2. The House passed this bill by a vote of 419-3 on Tuesday:

"Congress has voted overwhelmingly to hold the oppressive leaders of Russia, North Korea and Iran accountable for their rogue actions. Iran remains the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism, and Kim Jong-un continues to threaten North Korea's neighbors and the World. Russia intimidates its neighbors, occupies Ukraine, and attempted to meddle in our democracy during the 2016 elections. The United States must not ignore these aggressive actions. Instead, America and the world should respond with clear words backed by decisive action."

Lankford serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
